Elvis Blue on South African Idols season 6

Posted on 19. Jul, 2010 by Marc in South African Culture

Last night I managed to catch the last couple of minutes of the first episode of the new Idols season on MNet, and one of the contestants towards the end of the show, was a guy by the name of Elvis Blue. The name is a stage name, which is in memory of a friend of his, named Elvis Blue, who was an 11 year old boy who died of HIV/AIDS last year. The little boy’s dream was to be a rockstar and after his death Jan adopted his name and went out to pursue Elvis Blue’s dream by entering Idols. He also helps Aids orphans in the George area learn to play guitar and donates used guitars to the children.

Elvis Blue’s whose real name is Jan Hoogendyk, is actually quite an accomplished Afrikaans Gospel singer, and has 2 albums called Diep Riviere & Ontskemer out, the latter which was nominated for a SAMA award earlier this year. He also appeared on Kyknet show Kwela last year, talking about his Diep Riviere album. Jan was also previously part of the Joburg group Mono who released 3 albums in within a 5 year period. It looks like Elvis Blue is a new project for Jan, and so far he seems to have gripped loads of people heart strings.

Elvis Blue played a cover version of Bob Dylan’s “Make You Feel My Love“. The song was amazing, and even had one of the Idols judges in tears. I know I also felt a couple of goosebumps as well. You can also follow updates from Elvis Blue on his Facebook Fanpage & Twitter

Here is the video of the song from his audition. I’m putting my money on Elvis Blue to take it to the end, and win Idols. Amazing….

I really, really enjoyed listening to him and have already decided that I’m buying his 2 prevouis CD’s as well..

I honestly think that his ‘honest’ voice will speak to a lot of different people and from what I’ve seen – his heart is in the right place too!

May he continue to serve Him with his talents!

Should have won idols years ago !!!!! I was lost for words when he started singing and knew that this was going to be THE idol to beat. What a pleasure to hear a song so beautifully sung with honestly and genuine feeling.

What a beautiful song and the name Elvis blue is such an appropriate name to remember and pay tribute to a little one no longer here….!!!
VOTING FOR ELVIS BLUE FOR SURE!!!!!!

Elvis Blue/Jan is the kind of caring people we need in South Africa to make it a great country.

I’m too old to do this sort of thing but just had to say that you, Jan/Elvis should win Idols if you play your cards correctly. Be clever and clinical, go on choosing great songs like “Make You Feel My Love”. Mix up slow and heartfelt stuff with real rock. Try some of Adam Lambert’s songs (e.g. Born to be Wild and I’m Feeling Good) also Leonard Cohen’s ‘Alleluia’ and Don MacClean’/Roy Orbison’s “Crying”. Check out Meat Loaf for vocally challenging rock opera drama (well that’s what I call it). Stick in a South African classic e.g. Weeping’ (from Bright Blue). Can you sing Locnville’s hip-hop type number “Got The Sun in My Pocket’? Secondly, remember who is voting for you – most of the voting power is in the hands of (young) girls, with older women coming second. Don’t be indulgent and always choose what you like, but rather what will ’sell’ you. There is time after you WIN to sing what YOU want to.
